A Little Mistake That Cost a Lot! 9 years ago Krish Puri Cryptocurrencies , Inside the Fast Lane 1 Comment Here’s a story not many people know about: Back when I was a kid, I was still working as an internet marketer and was making a decent amount of money every month. So while doing my online marketing chores one day, I came across Bitcoin and noticed a few online service sellers had started accepting it as a payment option. Being tired of using PayPal and the problems associated with it, I was naturally interested in how the technology worked and started reading more about it and decided to invest $1000 into it after a bit of research. Before doing that however, I told my Dad about my plans and how the value of BTC could go up in the future. My Dad (being from the pre-internet era and having a very traditional mindset about investing) completely brainwashed me and convinced me it was a very stupid idea that would backfire quickly, and I would lose those one thousand dollars of mine in no time. Since I was still just a high school kid who had no knowledge on investing and how markets worked, I took his word for it and didn’t think twice about it. And this has now become one of the biggest regrets of my life! Pay very close attention to this. That $1000 investment today would’ve been worth $140 million. Yes, that’s ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY MILLION DOLLARS! And since Bitcoin still has a lot of potential left in it, that same investment could easily be worth over $600 million by the end of 2018. Instead of writing all this, I would be sitting in my own private yacht right now cruising the Caribbean and enjoying the warm, salty-breezed parallel universe. Oh well! But to be fair on my Dad’s part, even I in my wildest dreams at that time couldn’t imagine that the price would see such a parabolic increase. I knew it could go up, but I thought it could go up and maybe become 10 times of what it was back then. The funny part though is that my Dad has now started giving me his own money to invest in Bitcoin for him. Love you Dad! Lesson: Opportunities knock on the door all the time. It’s upto you if you want to jump on them or let them pass. Be bold, trust your judgment, and DO NOT hesitate in going too far. Because change can happen in an instant. Technical Analysis – Is It a Sham? 8 years ago Krish Puri Cryptocurrencies , Trading No Comments While reading one of my trading discussion groups a few days ago, I came across this interesting post shared by one of the members: As these months have gone by, I’ve come to the conclusion that the bull market and the effects of randomness bias a lot of people. People keep claiming “buy”, as the price goes up, but the fact that the market is on a bull run and everything is growing does not mean that this is right. Some claim things like “if we reach X we’re going to 15k, if we break X we’re going to 5k”, which do not make sense most of the time. Technical analysis has been proven to fail almost all the time with BTC; in fact, not even in the stock market it works every time, because if it did, everybody would be trading stocks and beating the market over and over. A nice article reflects on this matter: “What I do contend, is that people selectively, and possibly sub-consciously, choose charts and TA indicators that simply confirm what they have already concluded. They are successful, not because the chart is predictive but rather because they have developed sufficient experience, knowledge and “instinct” about the market that makes them successful. The chart is simply a crutch … whether they know it or not.” What’s most intriguing is that people over Twitter fail over and over in their technical analysis regarding crypto and simply decide to delete the evidence by removing their tweets, instead of admitting that their analysis did not hold up or that it was just waiting for “some kind of confirmation”. One could argue that it does not matter if you were right or not, you still can become rich by providing bad calls and creating a fake persona on Twitter that people enjoy reading about. As we have seen in the past, it’s clear that people do not care about results, or at least the people that use Twitter as their only source for information. To put it in perspective: Get 10,000 people and divide them in 2 channels of the same amount of people. Tell the first channel that “X coin” will go up and tell the other channel that it will go down, then, after the outcome, repeat the same process with the winning channel, divide it by 2 and then again, give them “Y coin” and tell them that it will go up. Do the opposite with the same channel and so on. In the end, you’ll have around 500 to 1,000 people that would believe you are a pro-trader in the market. Randomness will make you believe that you did right even though you just guessed and it randomly worked. If the only thing you have to measure your capacity is that you did well on a bull market, then you should stop praising yourself as a “really good analyst” or “better than average”. Take your calls, take a decision and then toss a coin to decide if you want to buy or not, write both results and after a month analyze who did better, you or the coin, which we could call randomness. While I can’t comment on whether Twitter traders actually delete their tweets later or not if they are wrong, I will have to completely disagree with the rest of the claim presented in the above argument. Like all other known methods of forecasting, the prediction of stocks is also based completely on the study of past data, and there are 3 important premises on which all Technical Analysis is based: Market action discounts everything: This means that the price action of a stock/commodity/coin is based completely on the Economic laws of supply and demand. If there is more demand than supply, the price will increase. On the other hand, if there is more supply than demand, the price will decrease. As a result, charts only reflect the overall psychology of the market and technicians do not worry about why the price increases or decreases, since anything that can possibly affect the price is ultimately reflected in the price. Prices move in trends, and a trend in motion will more likely move in the same direction until it reverses. History repeats itself, and all one needs to do to understand the future is study the past. Now, most critics of Technical Analysis often present the following 2 arguments: Technical Analysis is a self-fulfilling prophecy, since most traders reading the charts see the same thing at the same time which leads to immediate buying or selling in response to what they see in the chart pattern. Chart patterns are almost completely subjective, and no study has yet succeeded in mathematically quantifying them. While both of these criticisms are valid concerns, the problem with them is that they always cancel each other out. If the chart patterns are truly subjective, there’s no way that every technician will be able to read them the same way, which is what the self-fulfilling prophecy argument claims. And since chart patterns can’t be both subjective and objective at the same time, these 2 claims can’t coexist with each other. The real truth of the matter is that charting is indeed very subjective in nature and not everyone reads the same chart the same way, which is why you’ll often see a lot of doubt and disagreement among traders. Visit TradingView.com for example, where thousands of traders present their ideas on what’s going to happen to the prices of different stocks/commodities/cryptos in the future (based on their own independent studies and trading style). What you’ll find is that each trader basically has their own theory on what’s going to happen next, and even top traders on the platform often contradict each other by giving conflicting buying/selling advice. Some would advise you to go long based on what they think is happening, while others would tell you to short the market. So, saying that TA has been known to fail almost all the time with Bitcoin is a very bold claim, again because of the subjective nature of TA. Since most technical indicators can be looked at in a lot of different ways, one person’s TA failing does not necessarily mean the failure of another person’s TA. Now, let’s come to the second claim. While I do agree that there is always a certain amount of randomness in all markets, I’ll have to disagree again with the total randomness argument presented above. If prices were truly independent and unpredictable (which is what the Random Walk Theory claims), why are trends so clearly visible on charts? And why are so many trend following trading systems (my own Metis AI, for example) so profitable in nature? The arguer here talks about performance measurement in a bull market, but their argument is again flawed because if markets were truly based on randomness and did not trend, how would a trader even know the difference between a bull and a bear market? To understand this, let’s take a look at this Bitcoin chart from a few days ago: A person supporting the Random Walk Theory argument here would have a really difficult time convincing a Bitcoin holder that there is no visible trend in this chart. While statistical evidence can’t completely prove or disprove the Random Walk Theory, the idea of randomness is rejected completely by the TA community. And most people who claim randomness in markets are believed to be people who don’t fully understand all the rules and laws of Technical Analysis. Think of it this way: If a person who’s not familiar with Binary code comes across it for the first time, they won’t be able to extract any meaning from it and it would just seem like a bunch of random 0’s and 1’s to them. But the same piece of code would make perfect sense to a programmer who understands the language. The same can also be said for Technical Analysis. Just like how a student learning programming slowly begins to understand the code with time, the idea of randomness disappears as the skill in chart reading improves. So, while it is true that a certain amount of randomness does exist in all markets, the total randomness claim is difficult to believe especially when all the evidence points to the contrary. With that said, even with the right knowledge and tools, no trader can predict the market 100% accurately all the time due to how subjective Technical Analysis is. Nevertheless, using TA can still definitely help them in increasing their chances of beating the market by giving them an edge over all the other people who don’t use it. The Advantages of Using a Trading Bot 9 years ago Krish Puri Cryptocurrencies , Trading 3 Comments People often come and ask me this so I wrote this quick post explaining what advantages an intelligent trading bot can have over manual trading and how it can very easily outperform human beings: Bots are much faster since they communicate directly with the website server, and this gives them better entry and exit points. By the time a human enters the data on the webpage, the bot would’ve already bought cheaper (or sold higher) than them. And this can easily make the difference between a good and bad trade, especially when the volume of the market is really high. If the order doesn’t fill, bots will keep retrying until it does (again doing it faster than human beings). They are far more disciplined than humans. Instead of FOMOing (fear of missing out) into trades, they’ll always wait for a good entry. They know how to read and analyze data, and won’t make careless mistakes that are commonly made by humans. They don’t have weak hands and will not sell early unless it is absolutely required. FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) doesn’t affect them and they have strict rules set in place due to which they will not sell at a loss unless a stop loss condition is met. Smartweb Search Engine

SmartWeb Search Engine SmartWeb Search Engine Project Information: SmartWeb is a search engine I built as a final project for one of my Informatics classes at Indiana University, Bloomington. The search engine includes a crawler, indexing engine, link analysis engine, and retrieval engine written in Ruby along with a simple web interface built in HTML, CSS, and CGI. To build the search engine, I designed/implemented various crawling, indexing, and link analysis algorithms such as Breadth First Search (BFS), Jaccard Coefficient Scoring, TF-IDF Scoring, META Tag Relevancy Scoring (META Title, Description, and Keywords), etc.  in order to display highly relevant search results for each search query. Even though I’m currently happy with the search results, I plan on improving the improving the search engine to make the search results even better. Month: March 2018 Home 2018 March Month: March 2018 While reading one of my trading discussion groups a few days ago, I came across this interesting post shared by one of the members: As these months have gone by, I’ve come to the conclusion that the bull market and the effects of randomness bias a lot of people. People keep claiming “buy”, as the price goes up, but the fact that the market is on a bull run and everything is growing does not mean that this is right. Some claim things like “if we reach X we’re going to 15k, if we break X we’re going to 5k”, which do not make sense most of the time. Technical analysis has been proven to fail almost all the time with BTC; in fact, not even in the stock market it works every time, because if it did, everybody would be trading stocks and beating the market over and over. A nice article reflects on this matter: “What I do contend, is that people selectively, and possibly sub-consciously, choose charts and TA indicators that simply confirm what they have already concluded. They are successful, not because the chart is predictive but rather because they have developed sufficient experience, knowledge and “instinct” about the market that makes them successful. The chart is simply a crutch … whether they know it or not.” What’s most intriguing is that people over Twitter fail over and over in their technical analysis regarding crypto and simply decide to delete the evidence by removing their tweets, instead of admitting that their analysis did not hold up or that it was just waiting for “some kind of confirmation”. One could argue that it does not matter if you were right or not, you still can become rich by providing bad calls and creating a fake persona on Twitter that people enjoy reading about. As we have seen in the past, it’s clear that people do not care about results, or at least the people that use Twitter as their only source for information. To put it in perspective: Get 10,000 people and divide them in 2 channels of the same amount of people. Tell the first channel that “X coin” will go up and tell the other channel that it will go down, then, after the outcome, repeat the same process with the winning channel, divide it by 2 and then again, give them “Y coin” and tell them that it will go up. Do the opposite with the same channel and so on. In the end, you’ll have around 500 to 1,000 people that would believe you are a pro-trader in the market. Randomness will make you believe that you did right even though you just guessed and it randomly worked. If the only thing you have to measure your capacity is that you did well on a bull market, then you should stop praising yourself as a “really good analyst” or “better than average”. Take your calls, take a decision and then toss a coin to decide if you want to buy or not, write both results and after a month analyze who did better, you or the coin, which we could call randomness. While I can’t comment on whether Twitter traders actually delete their tweets later or not if they are wrong, I will have to completely disagree with the rest of the claim presented in the above argument. Like all other known methods of forecasting, the prediction of stocks is also based completely on the study of past data, and there are 3 important premises on which all Technical Analysis is based: Market action discounts everything: This means that the price action of a stock/commodity/coin is based completely on the Economic laws of supply and demand. If there is more demand than supply, the price will increase. On the other hand, if there is more supply than demand, the price will decrease. As a result, charts only reflect the overall psychology of the market and technicians do not worry about why the price increases or decreases, since anything that can possibly affect the price is ultimately reflected in the price. Prices move in trends, and a trend in motion will more likely move in the same direction until it reverses. History repeats itself, and all one needs to do to understand the future is study the past. Now, most critics of Technical Analysis often present the following 2 arguments: Technical Analysis is a self-fulfilling prophecy, since most traders reading the charts see the same thing at the same time which leads to immediate buying or selling in response to what they see in the chart pattern. Chart patterns are almost completely subjective, and no study has yet succeeded in mathematically quantifying them. While both of these criticisms are valid concerns, the problem with them is that they always cancel each other out. If the chart patterns are truly subjective, there’s no way that every technician will be able to read them the same way, which is what the self-fulfilling prophecy argument claims. And since chart patterns can’t be both subjective and objective at the same time, these 2 claims can’t coexist with each other. The real truth of the matter is that charting is indeed very subjective in nature and not everyone reads the same chart the same way, which is why you’ll often see a lot of doubt and disagreement among traders. Visit TradingView.com for example, where thousands of traders present their ideas on what’s going to happen to the prices of different stocks/commodities/cryptos in the future (based on their own independent studies and trading style). What you’ll find is that each trader basically has their own theory on what’s going to happen next, and even top traders on the platform often contradict each other by giving conflicting buying/selling advice. Some would advise you to go long based on what they think is happening, while others would tell you to short the market. So, saying that TA has been known to fail almost all the time with Bitcoin is a very bold claim, again because of the subjective nature of TA. Since most technical indicators can be looked at in a lot of different ways, one person’s TA failing does not necessarily mean the failure of another person’s TA. Now, let’s come to the second claim. While I do agree that there is always a certain amount of randomness in all markets, I’ll have to disagree again with the total randomness argument presented above. If prices were truly independent and unpredictable (which is what the Random Walk Theory claims), why are trends so clearly visible on charts? And why are so many trend following trading systems (my own Metis AI, for example) so profitable in nature? The arguer here talks about performance measurement in a bull market, but their argument is again flawed because if markets were truly based on randomness and did not trend, how would a trader even know the difference between a bull and a bear market? To understand this, let’s take a look at this Bitcoin chart from a few days ago: A person supporting the Random Walk Theory argument here would have a really difficult time convincing a Bitcoin holder that there is no visible trend in this chart. While statistical evidence can’t completely prove or disprove the Random Walk Theory, the idea of randomness is rejected completely by the TA community. And most people who claim randomness in markets are believed to be people who don’t fully understand all the rules and laws of Technical Analysis. Think of it this way: If a person who’s not familiar with Binary code comes across it for the first time, they won’t be able to extract any meaning from it and it would just seem like a bunch of random 0’s and 1’s to them. But the same piece of code would make perfect sense to a programmer who understands the language. The same can also be said for Technical Analysis. Just like how a student learning programming slowly begins to understand the code with time, the idea of randomness disappears as the skill in chart reading improves. So, while it is true that a certain amount of randomness does exist in all markets, the total randomness claim is difficult to believe especially when all the evidence points to the contrary. With that said, even with the right knowledge and tools, no trader can predict the market 100% accurately all the time due to how subjective Technical Analysis is. Nevertheless, using TA can still definitely help them in increasing their chances of beating the market by giving them an edge over all the other people who don’t use it. Posts by Krish Puri Home Krish Puri Posts by Krish Puri Krish Puri While reading one of my trading discussion groups a few days ago, I came across this interesting post shared by one of the members: As these months have gone by, I’ve come to the conclusion that the bull market and the effects of randomness bias a lot of people. People keep claiming “buy”, as the price goes up, but the fact that the market is on a bull run and everything is growing does not mean that this is right. Some claim things like “if we reach X we’re going to 15k, if we break X we’re going to 5k”, which do not make sense most of the time. Technical analysis has been proven to fail almost all the time with BTC; in fact, not even in the stock market it works every time, because if it did, everybody would be trading stocks and beating the market over and over. A nice article reflects on this matter: “What I do contend, is that people selectively, and possibly sub-consciously, choose charts and TA indicators that simply confirm what they have already concluded. They are successful, not because the chart is predictive but rather because they have developed sufficient experience, knowledge and “instinct” about the market that makes them successful. The chart is simply a crutch … whether they know it or not.” What’s most intriguing is that people over Twitter fail over and over in their technical analysis regarding crypto and simply decide to delete the evidence by removing their tweets, instead of admitting that their analysis did not hold up or that it was just waiting for “some kind of confirmation”. One could argue that it does not matter if you were right or not, you still can become rich by providing bad calls and creating a fake persona on Twitter that people enjoy reading about. As we have seen in the past, it’s clear that people do not care about results, or at least the people that use Twitter as their only source for information. To put it in perspective: Get 10,000 people and divide them in 2 channels of the same amount of people. Tell the first channel that “X coin” will go up and tell the other channel that it will go down, then, after the outcome, repeat the same process with the winning channel, divide it by 2 and then again, give them “Y coin” and tell them that it will go up. Do the opposite with the same channel and so on. In the end, you’ll have around 500 to 1,000 people that would believe you are a pro-trader in the market. Randomness will make you believe that you did right even though you just guessed and it randomly worked. If the only thing you have to measure your capacity is that you did well on a bull market, then you should stop praising yourself as a “really good analyst” or “better than average”. Take your calls, take a decision and then toss a coin to decide if you want to buy or not, write both results and after a month analyze who did better, you or the coin, which we could call randomness. While I can’t comment on whether Twitter traders actually delete their tweets later or not if they are wrong, I will have to completely disagree with the rest of the claim presented in the above argument. Like all other known methods of forecasting, the prediction of stocks is also based completely on the study of past data, and there are 3 important premises on which all Technical Analysis is based: Market action discounts everything: This means that the price action of a stock/commodity/coin is based completely on the Economic laws of supply and demand. If there is more demand than supply, the price will increase. On the other hand, if there is more supply than demand, the price will decrease. As a result, charts only reflect the overall psychology of the market and technicians do not worry about why the price increases or decreases, since anything that can possibly affect the price is ultimately reflected in the price. Prices move in trends, and a trend in motion will more likely move in the same direction until it reverses. History repeats itself, and all one needs to do to understand the future is study the past. Now, most critics of Technical Analysis often present the following 2 arguments: Technical Analysis is a self-fulfilling prophecy, since most traders reading the charts see the same thing at the same time which leads to immediate buying or selling in response to what they see in the chart pattern. Month: December 2017 Home 2017 December Month: December 2017 People often come and ask me this so I wrote this quick post explaining what advantages an intelligent trading bot can have over manual trading and how it can very easily outperform human beings: Bots are much faster since they communicate directly with the website server, and this gives them better entry and exit points. By the time a human enters the data on the webpage, the bot would’ve already bought cheaper (or sold higher) than them. And this can easily make the difference between a good and bad trade, especially when the volume of the market is really high. If the order doesn’t fill, bots will keep retrying until it does (again doing it faster than human beings). They are far more disciplined than humans. Instead of FOMOing (fear of missing out) into trades, they’ll always wait for a good entry. They know how to read and analyze data, and won’t make careless mistakes that are commonly made by humans. They don’t have weak hands and will not sell early unless it is absolutely required. FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) doesn’t affect them and they have strict rules set in place due to which they will not sell at a loss unless a stop loss condition is met. They can trade for you automatically 24/7 without requiring any kind of manual assistance or intervention. Month: February 2015 Home 2015 February Month: February 2015 I have often been asked what Search Engine Optimization is and the best way I can think of to answer this question is to do so through a blog post on this blog. Also, since I will be using this blog to write about Search Engine Optimization in the future as well, it would only be better if I start doing this through an introductory post on the topic. So, let’s start right away without any further ado. Search Engine Optimization – What is it? Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the practice of making your website more visible to search engine users; that is to say, when a user types a search phrase into the search engine, SEO is the practice of boosting a website higher in the rankings, and therefore making a user more likely to click on it. The second function of SEO is to ensure that users are directed to the most meaningful websites that relate to their search queries. For example, if a user were to search for the term “Indiana University,” the first link to show in the list of results would be the school’s official website because that would be the most relevant link that would point to a webpage full of the most informational content related to the term, in the search engine’s eye. To determine the order in which the sites are listed on the results page, the search engine looks for content, reliability, popularity and performance. The first word – content – is obvious, as a search engine wants to match a search term with a link that is most loaded with content for that term, as seen with the Indiana University example above. The search engine is, however, not looking for a link that overuses the keyword intentionally. If the term is clearly overused with the sole intention of increasing traffic, the search engine will not rank that website high in its results. Reliability is vital to a search engine as well; it looks for websites with trustworthy, verifiable information, websites that will help the users rather than hinder them. Additionally, a website ranks even higher when it links out to other, more authoritative or knowledgeable websites. A search engine will also check the site’s performance before ranking it on a results page – does the site have valid links, does it load in a respectable amount of time, is it easy to navigate, does it have too many pop up ads, and so forth. To succeed in a SEO campaign – that is, to make your site more visible and rank higher on the results page of different search engines– there are many methods a site creator or webmaster can use. Choosing the right keywords, for example, can greatly help in increasing traffic to a website. To choose the keywords, a webmaster may employ a keyword research tool such as the free Google Adwords Keyword Planner Tool to find less competitive keywords that drive the most amount of traffic. For example, “google seo tutorial” has an average search volume of 320 searches per month while “seo google tutorial” has an average search volume of only 91 searches per month. By simply targeting good keywords with less competition and more traffic, a webmaster can make it easier to rank his website and increase his overall search traffic. Another way in which a website can become more visible to search engines is by receiving links (or backlinks) from other sources on the internet. The most simple ways of doing this are through social media – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and so on – but the webmaster can also increase his online presence by talking about his website on places such as relevant forums, blogs, web 2.0 properties, etc. Another important method by which a webmaster can increase his website’s authority is by receiving backlinks from high authority websites such as government (.gov) and educational (.edu) websites. As mentioned above, search engines value authority and trustworthiness so if the creator is creating a site for Indiana University alumnae, it would be in his best interest to backlink to the school’s website, the top ranking search result for that term. Creating consistent domain names and having keywords in those domain names can also help in increasing the rankings of a website. In keeping with the Indiana University alumnae website, it would be more prudential for the creator to have a domain name that is the same on the website and all of the social media outlets than to have a different domain name for each outlet. In that same vein, it would also be wiser to have the keywords “Indiana” and “Alumnae” somewhere in the domain name than it would to have an irrelevant phrase or otherwise random word. The major search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo all monitor their search results to ensure that the search engine users are not linked to any faulty or spam websites. Not only this, but search engines will not assign a good rank to websites that overuse keywords, purchase links to make the site seem bigger than it actually is, or have a poor user experience. This is because if the search results page is poor, users will no longer trust that search engine. So, when creating a website, it is very important to keep SEO at the front of your mind as that will ensure that you keep your visitors happy and that you receive a steady amount of traffic from different search engines on the web. Month: August 2015 Home 2015 August Month: August 2015 When you start out with a SEO campaign for the first time, you might hear of the term “Keyword Research”, and you might wonder why this is so important to the success of your campaign. Ultimately, you want your website to pull in traffic, by ranking high on the different search engines on the internet. But to do this, you need to gain an edge over your competition. This is where keyword research comes into play. Where to Start First off, you want to identify who your target audience is. What are they interested in? What words would they use to talk about the things they do, tools they use, and so on? Who else might they be purchasing these things from? By answering these questions, you’ll have something called a “seed list” of potential keywords to test out in keyword research tools for ranking difficulty. What does “ranking difficulty” mean? It means that there are certain words that are more competitive than others because other companies are also using the words you’ve come up with. The more unique and specific the keyword string (also called “long tail keywords”), the less difficulty you’ll have in ranking for that keyword search. While your keywords might be unique, it’s also a good idea to go for keyword relevance. You can have unique keywords on a page by the ton but if they aren’t relevant to what your potential customers want (or readers, if you’re optimizing for a blog), then your potential customers or readers are not going to see your website. Test out the Tools When you’re running the search for each keyword, or a bunch of keywords on your seed list, test out your keywords on a number of keyword search tools. It’s also a good idea to use a competitive keyword tool to see how your competitors rank. Knowing your competition like this enables you to narrow down your own list and decrease the difficulty of getting ranked. This, essentially, is part of keyword discovery: discovering which keywords are going to help you get the ranking you want for your e-commerce website or blog. One of the easiest—and free—tools to use is taking advantage of Google’s drop-down auto-suggest “bar” to see which phrases or words are being searched for the most. This kind of creative use of keyword suggestion can help you with narrowing down potential longtail keywords. Alternatively, you can also go to Yahoo or Bing or other search engines to get potential keyword suggestions just to see what keywords get used at those places, as they also have auto-suggest boxes. Another tool that might come in handy with your keyword research is a free tool/website called Ubersuggest . Ubersuggest is a Google keyword scraper, which means that it will run a chosen keyword phrase along the entire alphabet, plus the numbers 0-9, giving you as many permutations as possible. It takes the tedium out of your keyword research, making your job much easier. Competition Analysis Now that you’ve got some preliminary research done with your seed list, there are three specific things that you need to know about competition and ranking difficulty when it comes to your keyword research. The first is how authoritative and trustworthy other competing sites are. In other words, how many links are on each competing site, and how relevant are those links? The second thing to figure out is how well-aligned each site is with the keyword itself. How well does a competing site you’re looking at answer the questions your potential customers would ask? The third aspect to look at is how trustworthy and authoritative each individual page on a competing site is. Are there a lot of backlinks that point to that website? How high is their keyword relevance? Customer Intent When most beginners start out with a SEO campaign, they often focus their thinking on driving traffic to a website, which is fine if you’re looking only to get eyes on a blog or newsletter, and you’re not worried so much about converting those visitors into actual customers. However, if you are in the e-commerce industry, conversion is what you’re after, so in that light, aim your keyword research in that direction, especially those specific, unique long tail keywords that are your most likely opportunities to rank high in the SERP, or search engine result pages for your service or product. Other Tips When you’re going about your keyword research, you might want to use tools that not only take into account the competitiveness of a keyword or keyword phrase, SERP of your competition and so on, but also look at misspellings of words. Sometimes websites will come up when someone’s misspelled a word, and Google will flash them a message saying “showing results for X misspelled word. Did you mean X?” Targeting such words can bring additional traffic to your website, since these words/phrases have a lot less competition than their actual counterparts. Google Keyword Planner Also, to get more ideas for keywords, look at the bottom of each search page and take a look at the related searches for a set of chosen keywords. And then look at the related search results for each of those individual result pages and then run all your potential keywords into the keyword tool of your choice. If you’re using the free Google Keyword Planner tool, however, it’s generally a good idea to only put in 3-5 keywords at first, just to make sure you’re able to generate more keyword suggestions. The more keywords you put in, the fewer keyword suggestions you’ll have from that tool. So, Why is Keyword Research Important? Like I said earlier, doing proper keyword research is an essential part of every SEO campaign, particularly if you are into e-commerce or have some other paid service to offer, even if it’s simply selling How-to eBooks. But even if you’re not selling a paid product or service and are simply writing a blog for all to see, you will want to do some proper research on your keywords in order to have an effective SEO campaign that can send traffic to your website. Without proper keyword research, you might still be able to generate some search engine traffic. The quality of that traffic, however, is going to be very different from the traffic you are going to get after spending some time on analyzing your keywords and optimizing them. Moreover, the chances of those website visitors converting into potential customers are going to increase greatly if you optimize your website for some well researched profit pulling traffic generating long tail keywords. The keyword research tool on the website not only analyzes your keywords, but it also analyzes your website and tells you if you’ll be able to rank for a particular keyword by checking your website’s authority and giving you a keyword difficulty rating in percentage form. SEOCockpit Keyword Research Tool – Another excellent keyword research tool that I personally use for almost all my SEO campaigns. The tool runs in the cloud and is thus extremely fast and very accurate in analyzing keywords. Google Keyword Planner – The best free keyword research tool out there, by none other than Google itself! The store will deal in PC hardware, PC games, PC software, PC accessories, Laptop accessories, data storage (hard drives and other media), printer and supplies, audio, electronic items such as mp3 players and digital cameras; gaming consoles, console games etc. It will offer various methods of payment, and will also have a “Pay On Delivery” option which will be limited to certain areas of Delhi and NCR. Shipping will be handled by the top players such as BlueDart for major cities, and by other companies for smaller regions. The launch date has not been decided yet, but it may be either by the end of this month or by the middle of August. Month: February 2016 Home 2016 February Month: February 2016 SEO is not what it used to be. The old SEO paradigm was individual words you put into your articles, and Google and other search engines crawled them. That’s when the internet was still sort of young-ish, before “Web 2.0,” Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, etc, with all the hash tags, viral videos and status updates and everything that we are all now so familiar with. To clarify, even though the internet has always been quite social by its very nature from the very beginning—computers linked to computers, sites hosting chatrooms, chatrooms linking people, etc., social media, as we know it now, has turned SEO and the internet itself both on their ears. The Cyber-Bonfire Social media, collectively, is the modern version of everyone gathering around the beach bonfire and chatting about their day—or week–with a few cold ones and a set of good friends. When it comes to music around that actual bonfire, maybe someone produces a guitar or a boom box. Only now the bonfire is virtual, and chatting is an eternal flame, burning up people’s phones with Facebook and Twitter conversations. And the music and other good times? Well, that’s provided by YouTube and Spotify playlists, for starters. Now, people might still have actual bonfire parties, but let’s face it—the influence of social media is still there. Once you mention such an event on Facebook and invite people, instead of folks calling you to say they’ll be at the party, they text you. And instead of waiting for photos to be developed, Instagram allows you to take photos and upload them immediately to the Web, to be shared, tagged, commented on. Provide people with “share” buttons, and things will be shared. That is the nature of the human desire to connect with others. Be it deep thoughts around bonfires or cyberswapping recipes for “s’mores,” or recommending a brand of marshmallow, communicating and sharing is an intrinsic part of human behavior. The Basics of Social Marketing Quite correctly, the phenomenon that is internet marketing has fixed its cyber-eyes on social media, thanks to all this social availability going on. Thusly, a new sub-sector has arisen in recent years: social media marketing, or as some people might call it, social marketing. This sub-sector is a way for companies, freelancers and solopreneurs to put themselves, their brand, and their products in front of people, engaging with potential and existing customers, creating relevant, valuable content on a daily basis, perhaps more than once a day in the case of Twitter. Because these days, content is truly king. And because of those all-important share buttons, once you, as a company, solopreneur or freelancer, put relevant, frequent content out there to be shared, it will be shared, “+1’d,” “liked,” retweeted, pinned, and so on. Social media has, quite frankly, become the online version of “word-of-mouth.” In essence: viral marketing. YouTube, for a more specific example, is one of the best social platforms for viral marketing out there. If you post a video on YouTube about yourself, or your frequent videos are your product (e.g., Khan Academy’s “how-tos” for various subjects, which turned into a full-fledged website later on), chances are, people are going to share the living daylights out of what you’ve posted, especially if it’s something that is relevant to their personal interests. Or if it’s more of a general topic or product that just about everyone will comment on and likely get behind, viral marketing will play a role, here, too. And like other social media sites, the more videos you post, the more popular your channel will be, and you’ll get traffic to both your video and your main website, especially if you include a call to action in your videos and a link (crawlable by Google!) in the video descriptions. Social Marketing and SEO So, just how and why is social marketing an important part of a search engine optimization campaign? How does it all tie in? It all ties in very organically, as a matter of fact. Because, according to Neil Patel, cofounder of KISSmetrics and QuickSprout, “Social is the new SEO.” To put his comment in context, he said this in response to Google’s Matt Cutts’ 2014 video, where Cutts said that social signals—meaning shares from social sites—don’t factor in to how a site is ranked, at least not according to Google’s algorithms. This rather annoyed the SEO marketers out there who put a lot of time and money into the social media portion of their SEO campaigns, in order to get ranked by Google. Social media and SEO go hand-in-hand! Neil Patel, on the other hand, told folks not to abandon social media as a part of SEO altogether because in reality, social media sites are search engines in their own right, and people will find you, and the links to your main website or sites. Consider YouTube again, for example. Yes, Google owns YouTube, and therefore, YouTube videos will appear high in Google search results for a topic. YouTube, however, has its own search algorithms, thereby rendering it a search engine—albeit specifically for videos. A similar thing is true of Facebook and Twitter and their respective search filters, the hash tag being one of Twitter’s primary filters. Someone may have heard of your company being on Facebook, for example, but may have lost the original link on which they saw you. So they go to Facebook and look you up. From there, they can easily go to your Twitter page, and your company website, as well as Pinterest, Instagram and so on. Conclusion Social media has definitely changed the landscape of not just the internet but of search engine optimization itself. Because it’s not just about a few well-placed longtail keywords in your blog or website articles. Content—and the frequency of it—is king, especially on social media sites, which are the bonfire parties of the 21st century. Because content is king, it’s played a strong role in the rise of social media marketing, accentuating the need for companies and solopreneurs of all stripes to remain in near-constant engagement with their clients and customers. Especially if social media is helping companies and solopreneurs gain the actual site traffic, Google ranking and sales they want. A Little Mistake That Cost a Lot! 9 years ago Krish Puri Cryptocurrencies , Inside the Fast Lane 1 Comment Here’s a story not many people know about: Back when I was a kid, I was still working as an internet marketer and was making a decent amount of money every month. So while doing my online marketing chores one day, I came across Bitcoin and noticed a few online service sellers had started accepting it as a payment option. Being tired of using PayPal and the problems associated with it, I was naturally interested in how the technology worked and started reading more about it and decided to invest $1000 into it after a bit of research. Before doing that however, I told my Dad about my plans and how the value of BTC could go up in the future. My Dad (being from the pre-internet era and having a very traditional mindset about investing) completely brainwashed me and convinced me it was a very stupid idea that would backfire quickly, and I would lose those one thousand dollars of mine in no time. Since I was still just a high school kid who had no knowledge on investing and how markets worked, I took his word for it and didn’t think twice about it. And this has now become one of the biggest regrets of my life! Pay very close attention to this. That $1000 investment today would’ve been worth $140 million. Yes, that’s ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY MILLION DOLLARS! And since Bitcoin still has a lot of potential left in it, that same investment could easily be worth over $600 million by the end of 2018. Instead of writing all this, I would be sitting in my own private yacht right now cruising the Caribbean and enjoying the warm, salty-breezed parallel universe. Oh well! But to be fair on my Dad’s part, even I in my wildest dreams at that time couldn’t imagine that the price would see such a parabolic increase. I knew it could go up, but I thought it could go up and maybe become 10 times of what it was back then. The funny part though is that my Dad has now started giving me his own money to invest in Bitcoin for him. Love you Dad! Lesson: Opportunities knock on the door all the time. It’s upto you if you want to jump on them or let them pass. Be bold, trust your judgment, and DO NOT hesitate in going too far. Because change can happen in an instant. The Importance of Social Marketing In SEO 10 years ago Krish Puri Internet Marketing , Search Engine Optimization , Social Marketing No Comments SEO is not what it used to be. The old SEO paradigm was individual words you put into your articles, and Google and other search engines crawled them. That’s when the internet was still sort of young-ish, before “Web 2.0,” Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, etc, with all the hash tags, viral videos and status updates and everything that we are all now so familiar with. To clarify, even though the internet has always been quite social by its very nature from the very beginning—computers linked to computers, sites hosting chatrooms, chatrooms linking people, etc., social media, as we know it now, has turned SEO and the internet itself both on their ears. The Cyber-Bonfire Social media, collectively, is the modern version of everyone gathering around the beach bonfire and chatting about their day—or week–with a few cold ones and a set of good friends. When it comes to music around that actual bonfire, maybe someone produces a guitar or a boom box. Only now the bonfire is virtual, and chatting is an eternal flame, burning up people’s phones with Facebook and Twitter conversations. And the music and other good times? Well, that’s provided by YouTube and Spotify playlists, for starters. Now, people might still have actual bonfire parties, but let’s face it—the influence of social media is still there. Once you mention such an event on Facebook and invite people, instead of folks calling you to say they’ll be at the party, they text you. And instead of waiting for photos to be developed, Instagram allows you to take photos and upload them immediately to the Web, to be shared, tagged, commented on. Provide people with “share” buttons, and things will be shared. That is the nature of the human desire to connect with others. Be it deep thoughts around bonfires or cyberswapping recipes for “s’mores,” or recommending a brand of marshmallow, communicating and sharing is an intrinsic part of human behavior. The Basics of Social Marketing Quite correctly, the phenomenon that is internet marketing has fixed its cyber-eyes on social media, thanks to all this social availability going on. Thusly, a new sub-sector has arisen in recent years: social media marketing, or as some people might call it, social marketing. This sub-sector is a way for companies, freelancers and solopreneurs to put themselves, their brand, and their products in front of people, engaging with potential and existing customers, creating relevant, valuable content on a daily basis, perhaps more than once a day in the case of Twitter. Because these days, content is truly king. And because of those all-important share buttons, once you, as a company, solopreneur or freelancer, put relevant, frequent content out there to be shared, it will be shared, “+1’d,” “liked,” retweeted, pinned, and so on. Social media has, quite frankly, become the online version of “word-of-mouth.” In essence: viral marketing. YouTube, for a more specific example, is one of the best social platforms for viral marketing out there. If you post a video on YouTube about yourself, or your frequent videos are your product (e.g., Khan Academy’s “how-tos” for various subjects, which turned into a full-fledged website later on), chances are, people are going to share the living daylights out of what you’ve posted, especially if it’s something that is relevant to their personal interests. Or if it’s more of a general topic or product that just about everyone will comment on and likely get behind, viral marketing will play a role, here, too. And like other social media sites, the more videos you post, the more popular your channel will be, and you’ll get traffic to both your video and your main website, especially if you include a call to action in your videos and a link (crawlable by Google!) in the video descriptions. Social Marketing and SEO So, just how and why is social marketing an important part of a search engine optimization campaign? How does it all tie in? It all ties in very organically, as a matter of fact. Because, according to Neil Patel, cofounder of KISSmetrics and QuickSprout, “Social is the new SEO.” To put his comment in context, he said this in response to Google’s Matt Cutts’ 2014 video, where Cutts said that social signals—meaning shares from social sites—don’t factor in to how a site is ranked, at least not according to Google’s algorithms. This rather annoyed the SEO marketers out there who put a lot of time and money into the social media portion of their SEO campaigns, in order to get ranked by Google. Social media and SEO go hand-in-hand! Neil Patel, on the other hand, told folks not to abandon social media as a part of SEO altogether because in reality, social media sites are search engines in their own right, and people will find you, and the links to your main website or sites. Consider YouTube again, for example. Yes, Google owns YouTube, and therefore, YouTube videos will appear high in Google search results for a topic. YouTube, however, has its own search algorithms, thereby rendering it a search engine—albeit specifically for videos. A similar thing is true of Facebook and Twitter and their respective search filters, the hash tag being one of Twitter’s primary filters. Someone may have heard of your company being on Facebook, for example, but may have lost the original link on which they saw you. So they go to Facebook and look you up. From there, they can easily go to your Twitter page, and your company website, as well as Pinterest, Instagram and so on. Conclusion Social media has definitely changed the landscape of not just the internet but of search engine optimization itself. Because it’s not just about a few well-placed longtail keywords in your blog or website articles. Content—and the frequency of it—is king, especially on social media sites, which are the bonfire parties of the 21st century. Because content is king, it’s played a strong role in the rise of social media marketing, accentuating the need for companies and solopreneurs of all stripes to remain in near-constant engagement with their clients and customers. Especially if social media is helping companies and solopreneurs gain the actual site traffic, Google ranking and sales they want.
